iPhone 5 Singapore Telco Price Comparison: SingTel vs Starhub vs M1

For iPhone 5 Singapore fans, you are definitely looking for the best deal when it comes to purchasing your new iPhone. It might be the device that is going to stick with for the next 2-years at least. Or it might be the device that will earn you some money if you so decide to sell it.

If you choose the latter, you can definitely make decent margin from extending your mobile contract. As of today [last check October 24, 2012], iPhone 5 runs out at all SingTel shops. In resale market, iPhone 5 with 16GB is going for a hefty $1,300 tag. That is quite a sizable margin considering that the Recommended Retail Price (RRP) of iPhone 5 Singapore with 16GB storage is only S$948. If you have a BNIB iPhone 5, put it up for sale and you can always buy it a later time. That could easily earn you a 20% profit margin.

If you are indeed planning to re-sign your contract with the local telco, here is how they square off against each other. For the lowest plan (~$39), M1 appears to have absorbed noticeably larger subsidy for the iPhone 5 compared to SingTel and Starhub. Over 2-years, they differ by as much as $70. The next plan (~59), M1 still offers the largest subsidy, but the difference come down to about $30 over two years. But for this tier, it is a bit tricky when picking the winner between M1 and Starhub. While M1 plan is $20 cheaper, Starhub includes larger data bundle with the plan. It depends on your Internet and bandwidth usage. If your main usage is Facebook, news reading and photo sharing, then 3GB is more than sufficient. Typically, my monthly usage hovers around 1GB and so far has never exceeded 1.5GB. If your main usage is downloading or watching video streaming, then you know your own limit.

In conclusion, if you are free to choose between any of the telco, I would think the most economic sense is to go with M1. If you are worried about the network coverage and quality, rest assured that you will not be worse off than your peers on the other networks. Simply because all of their network suck.
